A Fresh Idea for the Conservatives

Newsweek's Fareed Zakaria writes:
As conservatives survey the damage they have done to the Republican Party, they have fixed upon one comforting notion. John McCain lost the election, according to many of them, because he supported the surge in Iraq.
^^^
The fact is that had the surge failed, McCain would have lost. It succeeded, and he lost. The logical conclusion is that the surge was irrelevant to McCain's fate -- that there were broader reasons for the resounding Republican loss.
^^^
The Republican Party's social program is out of tune with an increasingly young, diverse and tolerant electorate.
As the conservative writer David Frum points out, "College-educated Americans have come to believe that their money is safe with the Democrats -- but that their values are under threat from Republicans." [emphasis added]

Just as, once upon a time, men wanted to keep women uneducated in order to be able to rule unhindered, so, now, Republicans would like to keep the masses uneducated for the same reason.

Sorry-- it's too late --that ship has sailed thanks to FDR's GI Bill and other Progressive policies. They're just going to have to suck it up and get used to the idea that, along the way, the electorate learned how to think. So they're going to have to come up with other ideas to get what they want from the rest of us.
They could do worse than to simply start telling us the truth.

and the repubs failed because they suck -- plain and simple

suck at everything....

but let them overanalyze to death and let them pick Palin to lead.....

watch them go the way of the Whigs to the know-nothing party

The war mongering compassionate conservatives failed because their lies are shining through!
Look at the big picture and it is not Iraq! The surge failed! We are now losing Afghanistan and Pakistan is openly training soldiers to shoot down our drones.
Attacking Iraq along with the surge has succeeded for the war mongers by creating more war for their forever war Obama will be forced to take over!

hi, DCap--
yep-- I would love it, too, if they would just keep analyzing and coming up with the wrong conclusions. maybe it would keep em out of trouble.

we DO need [at minimum] 2 parties if we're going to maintain our status as a democratic republic. but, to my mind, the parties need to have at least a nodding acquaintance with sanity-- something the rethugs departed from back during Reagan's 1980's, at least-- though Nixon gave it a pretty good run for its money even before then.

hi Jim--
yeah, I've long wondered how the words "compassionate" and "war" can be coupled the way our politicians have managed to do.

I also take issue with the person who wrote this article: he said the surge "succeeded."
it didn't. it's purpose was to allow the Iraqi gov't to "step up". it never did. when that didn't happen, the rethugs simply rewrote history and assigned a different rationale to the surge-- and labeled it "successful".
how creative of them!

I have a different label for the whole exercise: "Lying."

You got it two crows. That is why I keep saying lying is the new truth! Watching two more Politicians here in Ma.caught on film stuffing bribes down their shits and then defend themselves saying they do a good job and will be vindicated is down right wrenching!

hi, Jim--
it would be funny -- how the rethugs say they'll be vindicated, no matter what they do.
it WOULD be funny -- if it weren't so pathetic and if they weren't doing so much harm to the country in the process.
