Today, I sent an email to President Obama. I hope enough of these are sent so as to catch the attention of his staff and they get brought to his attention.

Since a groundswell of small donations got him into office—I hope a groundswell of angry voices will wake him up to the disastrous mistake he is making.

The defense, 'I was just following orders' didn't work in Nuremberg. Why should it be allowed here?
And, what about holding accountable the people who gave the orders? And the people who drafted the memos giving the people who authorized torture the justification for their orders?

If the President refuses to take action against torture-- thereby giving precedent to the presidents who follow him --I will find it necessary to donate as much money as I can to any Democrat who challenges him in his next primary. I will campaign for him or her, as well.

If Mr. Obama secures the nomination, I will be compelled to vote for a Republican president for the first time in my life.
After all, if Mr. Obama does not appoint a special prosecutor and throw his full weight behind this matter---- what is the difference?

Two Crows, I fully understand your frustration and agree with much of what you say. I draw the line at voting Republican, however! Nothing in the world would ever convince me to do that. Ever.

I saw this this morning and it's horrifying. I can hardly think about it without getting violently sick to my stomach.

I cross-post my blog on Talking Points Memo, where there is a discussion pertinent to what you've posted here. You might want to follow it and comment, too.
We're all floundering now, trying to come to terms with what we should do about the corruption and atrocities done in our names over the past eight years. I wish I knew the answer, but it really does help to read thoughtful points of view of others.
(That's why I read you!)

Any Republican nominee will be at least as pro torture as Obama. It would make more sense to vote for a third party candidate.

Hi Ramona--
I know. I took some liberty with the truth when I wrote to the WH.
But I wanted to get their attention.

I DO plan, if Obama doesn't backtrack on this, to work for and donate to a primary Dem challenger. And to remind everyone I know about this mess.

And thanks for the praise. Sometimes it seems like I'm shouting in a soundproofed room. Then I read blogs from you and a few others and don't feel quite so crazy after all.

hi libhom--
yeah, you're right.
I'd hate to vote 3rd party. In this country that's the same as voting rethuglican, really.

I did that in 1980. I voted for Anderson. And have regretted it ever since.
Carter kept saying a vote for Anderson was a vote for Reagan -- and he was right.

If Obama doesn't back down, I'll work for Edwards or someone. Then, if Obama is nominated, I'll vote for him, I guess.
