I've been hearing a saying lately. I don't know if it's a Florida-ism or if it's out there generally:
"It's better to be lucky than good."

the way I see it is: we in this country have been consistently lucky in having been given enormous natural resources, a tolerably passable gov't when compared to most of the ones out there, etc.
meanwhile, as I think we agree, being 'good' has certainly not been a part of the mix since well before the advent of the Bush/Cheney et al calamity. they are simply the logical extension of a downward spiral we've been experiencing for a long, long time as evidenced by genocide, slavery, general xenophobia, exclusionary policies, general discrimination/ segregation while piously mouthing platitudes-- I could go on and on-- but you get the drift, I'm sure.
