Dept. of Misdirection: With Iraq a Disaster, GOP Goes Crazy Over a Newspaper Ad -- Arianna Huffington

Does anybody really believe the problem with the war in Iraq is too much questioning of those in authority, too much bluntness, and not enough deference to those who have been in charge of the war for the last four years?

That's apparently the feeling of all the conservative talk-show hosts and GOP presidential candidates who came down with the vapors over the MoveOn ad that had the temerity to question Gen. David Petraeus.

Where's the bluntness, when a General in charge of our troops and a President tells the American people that they would withdraw 30,000 troops by next summer.

Do they think that we are dumb or just another Republican , they are talking too. By law they the 30,000 troops will be home regardless to what they say or do and to speak as if they are reducing the surge is lying.

The amount of time spent in Iraq, will be up for those 30,000 troops and that's why they will be back home next summer, now that's being BLUNT!

hey L T--
shhhhhhhhh!!! we're not supposed to notice that!

we're also not supposed to notice that Bush and Betray-us are touting as 'success' the fact that we'll be left with exactly the same number of troops we started with before the window dressing that was sold to Congress -- uhh -- 'surge that will give the Iraqi gov't breathing space'. the surge which has, of course, failed in its ostensible mission while succeeding in its true mission: that of giving Bush/Cheney breathing room to pass the disaster they created on to a Democratic president.

There was so much coverage on that stupid ad and the "surge" that the Democrats missed the chance to question the General on the entire war strategy. They never pinned him down, from what I could see, on an exit strategy. They only talked in vague terms about how long we would remain. It was a squandered opportunity and the Dems let the right wingers with their pig-like squeals over moveon to take control of the hearings and the news reports.

yep, ME--
once again, the Dems let the right-wingers decide the terms of the debate and the hearing.

remember 2 years ago when the press was full of how disorganized and clueless the dems were? seems they were right.

I really am questioning if there's some conspiracy to keep the war going for political reasons by BOTH sides.

You know the way the light of hundreds of torches reflects off of the freshly sharpened tines of hundreds of pitchforks? I long for that light these days.

It's just propanda using the most basic forms of persuasion

1) Appeal to Patriotism

2) Appeal to Authority

3) Appeal to Honor

4) Appeal to Pity.

That's all the right has. They cannot make any argument if favor of the permanent occupation of Iraq beyond these 4 points.

Rove's turning weakness into strength, something Republicans have mastered.

The problem with the ad, as I saw it, was that it gave the broadcast MSM the excuse to spend far more time covering the ad than the underlying issue. The ad itself wasn't quite accurate. Petraeus is far more despicable than the ad portrayed him.

They really did focus on that. It gave them a chance to focus their failure on dems talking like they do. Anyway, I heard Cheeney throwing his stupid 2 cents in today.

hi, SbT--
I'd join you. it'd be a sight to see.

hey, Poli--
and accuse, accuse, accuse:
'if you don't agree with us you're a terrorist',
'cut and run', etc.
and the dems fall for it every damned time.

hi, TC--
agreed.
at first, I thought the ad was a good idea -- till I saw the way the rethugs turned it to their advantage and the dems let them get away with it.

the AD isn't the issue here, people!!!

hi, AAC--
I didn't catch Cheney. I think I don't even want to know what HE had to say.
