It's not often that I agree with Kathleen Parker. But, this time I believe she got it right:

Phelps Takes a Hit by Kathleen Parker
The Washington Post
It's hell being a celebrity, especially if you're young and find yourself at a party, where marijuana and cameras should never mix.

And it's not exactly heaven being sheriff of a county with escalating drug crimes and pressure to treat all offenders equally.

Thus it is that Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps and Sheriff Leon Lott of South Carolina's Richland County are being forced to treat seriously a crime that shouldn't be one.

Oh, yeah. I don't often agree with Kathleen, either, but this silliness about marijuana laws has gone on for far too long. Our jails are filled with people who broke a law that shouldn't even be there.
I've never smoked pot in my life, but I've been around plenty of people who have--and do. This is one of those foolish laws about something as benign as, let's say, liquor. Sure, you can get into trouble with both, but enough already with the punishment not fitting the crime.

There is no crime here other than trying to defame an Olympic Champion with 14 golds. That is the crime and being perpetrated to keep this holier than thou agenda on track. I can't stand it!

hi, Ramona--
if I remember right, the alcohol lobby leaned on congress to outlaw marijuana. they didn't want to market it because it's too easy to grow your own. since they couldn't see a profit in it, they decided it should be illegal.

hey, Jim--
back in the 1970's Donald Westlake [a very funny novelist] predicted that there would be mayhem when people were arrested for virtually nothing-- and came out of prison with a whole new set of skills learned from the other inmates --along with anger at the system that put them away.

Sounds like modern America! The guy must have been a visionary!

hi Jim--
he probably is.
he's also very, very funny.

I heartily recommend his Dortmunder series. [Dortmunder is a thief who is a brilliant planner of major heists. and something ALWAYS goes wrong. :D ]
the first book is, The Hot Rock in case you're interested.

Big Pharma is the leader of the group that keeps cannabis illegal. They won't be able to make any money off it since it's readily available and easily grown.

I will check him out on line!

hi, Dusty--
yeah, that makes sense, too.
all big business says --'If I can't make a profit, I'll make it illegal.'

what a good idea.
a$$holes.

hi, Jim--
I know Abe books has lots of his books for sale -- cheap.

only be careful. while he has lots of funny stuff, he also has some very, very dark stuff. too dark for my taste.

any Dortmunder book is always a good bet. I can give you a list of those titles if you want. and I can warn you away from his dark stuff -- unless you like that sort of thing.
